Why Ground Transport Matters More Here Than at Sydney Airport
Sydney Kingsford Smith has a train station underneath it. Western Sydney International will too — the Metro station box is already built into the terminal — but the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport line is not expected until mid-to-late 2027, well after the airport opens on 25 October 2026.
That gap matters. The airport’s own Master Plan expects roughly 90% of users to arrive by vehicle at opening. For the first year or more, getting to Nancy-Bird Walton is a road journey however you do it — the question is just whose vehicle.
The M12 Changed the Maths
The M12 Motorway opened in March 2026 and connects the airport directly to the M7 at Cecil Hills. It is toll-free, which is unusual for a Sydney motorway and makes a real difference to the total cost of the trip.
Practically, that puts Penrith and Liverpool about 25–35 minutes from the terminal and the Sydney CBD about 45–55 minutes. For most of Western Sydney, this airport is now dramatically closer than Kingsford Smith — see our side-by-side comparison.

Which Option Suits Which Traveller
Travelling light, flexible on time, near St Marys? The free WSI Link bus is hard to argue with — it costs nothing. It runs every 30 minutes from 4:30am, which covers most but not all early departures.
Family, group, or lots of luggage? A private transfer wins on nearly every measure. One fixed fare covers everyone, child seats are fitted free, and nobody wrestles suitcases onto a train. For groups of eight or more a mini bus is usually cheaper than several rideshares.
