Sydney Airport (officially Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, code SYD) has three passenger terminals, each handling different airlines and route types. Confusion about which terminal serves which airline is the most common pre-travel mistake passengers make — particularly the persistent error that Qantas operates from T2. (It does not. Qantas is at T3.) Critical: Qantas operates from T3, NOT T2. This catches many travellers out. Virgin/Jetstar/Rex = T2, Qantas/QantasLink = T3, all international = T1.
T1 International — The Long-Haul Hub
T1 is Sydney Airport's international terminal and the busiest of the three. Every passenger flying to or from a destination outside Australia uses T1, regardless of whether they're flying with Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Cathay, United, Air New Zealand, or any other carrier. T1 is on the western side of the airport precinct, separated from T2 and T3 by the runway.

T1 facilities

- Multiple cafes, restaurants and bars airside and landside

T1 transit times
Allow 3 hours for international departures. Customs and immigration on arrival typically takes 30–60 minutes; SmartGate eligible passengers move faster. Walking distance from baggage to the public Arrivals concourse is around 100–150 metres.
T2 Domestic — Virgin, Jetstar & Rex
T2 is the larger of the two domestic terminals and serves Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Rex Airlines. It handles the bulk of domestic passenger volume in Sydney, including high-frequency routes to Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

T2 transit times
Allow 90 minutes with checked baggage, 60 minutes carry-on only. Domestic check-in and security are quicker than international, with most passengers airside within 20–30 minutes of arriving at the terminal.
T3 Domestic — Qantas & QantasLink Only
T3 is the smaller domestic terminal, exclusively used by Qantas mainline and QantasLink. The terminal was upgraded substantially over the past decade and includes the dedicated Qantas Domestic Business Lounge, Chairman's Lounge, and Qantas Club. No other airline operates from T3.

T3 transit times
Allow 90 minutes for connections to Qantas international (rare via T3) or 60 minutes for pure domestic. T3 is generally less crowded than T2.
Getting Between Terminals
T1 (International) is on the western side of the airport. T2 and T3 are adjacent on the eastern side, separated by the airport's main north-south runway. The T1→T2/T3 distance is about 4km by road or one train stop. Three options:
1. Free T-Bus shuttle
The T-Bus runs between T1 and T2/T3 approximately every 10 minutes from 6am to 9pm, free of charge. Travel time is around 10 minutes. T-Bus stops are clearly signed at each terminal. Excellent for passengers with carry-on only; less convenient with multiple checked bags.
2. Sydney Airport Link train
The T8 Airport Line connects Domestic Station (under T2/T3) and International Station (under T1) in one short stop. Costs $8.85 per trip in 2026 (no $22.70 access fee for inter-terminal transit). Faster than the T-Bus — about 2 minutes plus walking time to/from platforms.
3. Taxi or private transfer
A taxi between terminals is around $20–25 once kerb fees and tolls are factored in. For pre-booked transfers like Ram's, inter-terminal transfers can be quoted on request. For tight international-to-domestic connections with multiple bags, this is the smoothest option.

Pickup Zones for Pre-Booked Transfers

Common Mistakes Travellers Make
- Going to T2 for a Qantas flight — Qantas is at T3
- Booking inter-terminal transfers too tightly — allow 60 minutes minimum between an international arrival and a domestic onward flight
- Forgetting that international Jetstar long-haul flights depart from T1, not T2 — only Jetstar domestic is at T2
- Paying the $22.70 access fee unnecessarily — if you're transferring between terminals only, take the free T-Bus instead of the train
