About Sydney Airport Terminal 2
Terminal 2 (T2) is Sydney Airport's central domestic terminal, used by Virgin Australia, Jetstar (Australia's largest low-cost carrier), and Rex (Regional Express). It sits on the eastern side of the runway, between the international terminal (T1) and the Qantas-only terminal (T3) — about a 5-minute walk from T3.
T2 is a mid-sized terminal with a straightforward layout — check-in and security on the upper level, departure gates beyond security, and baggage claim plus arrivals on the ground floor. The Airport Link train station serving both T2 and T3 is located between the two terminals.
Three airlines operate from T2:
- Virgin Australia: One of Australia's two major full-service domestic carriers. Frequent services from T2 to all major Australian cities including Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Cairns, Gold Coast, Canberra, Hobart, and Darwin.
- Jetstar: Australia's largest low-cost carrier (Qantas Group). High-frequency domestic services on routes like Sydney-Melbourne, Sydney-Gold Coast, and Sydney-Cairns. Some short-haul international (e.g. New Zealand, Bali).
- Rex (Regional Express): Operates regional NSW services and metro jet routes to major capitals such as Melbourne and Brisbane.
For other Sydney Airport terminal guides, visit Terminal 1 International or Terminal 3 (Qantas/QantasLink).
STEP 1
Land & Disembark (3-7 min)
Aircraft taxis to gate. Disembark via aerobridge (most flights) or via stairs and tarmac walk (occasional Rex regional turboprops).
STEP 2
Walk to Baggage (3-5 min)
Follow signs to the baggage claim area. T2 is compact — most arrivals walk through in under 5 minutes. Switch your phone on if you haven't already.
STEP 3
Collect Bags (5-15 min)
Wait for luggage on the carousel. Carry-on only? Skip this step. Your driver typically messages you with the Shuttle Bay location around now.
STEP 4
Walk to Shuttle Bay (3-5 min)
Exit T2 and follow Shuttle Bay signs. This is the designated pickup area — your driver will be waiting in the vehicle described in their message.
Total time: typically 15-25 minutes. Ram's gives you 40 minutes free waiting — well above the average requirement.
Departing from T2 — What to Expect
Ram's drops you at the T2 departures level, where Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Rex check-in counters and self-service kiosks are located. After bag drop, proceed through security screening, then into the departure gate area.
T2 has a moderate selection of dining (cafes, bars, fast food) and retail options after security. Premium frequent flyer lounges include:
- Virgin Australia Lounge (Velocity Gold/Platinum and paid access)
- Rex Lounge (eligible Rex passengers)
- Jetstar does not have its own lounge — paid access available at some Plaza Premium-style facilities
For T2 domestic departures, arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before your scheduled departure (2 hours during peak periods such as school holidays and long weekends). For full preparation tips, read our Transfer Day Guide.
Three airlines: Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Rex (Regional Express). All their domestic Sydney flights use T2. If you're flying Qantas or QantasLink, you'll be at T3 instead. For overseas flights, see T1 International.
Pickup is at the Shuttle Bay area outside the T2 arrivals terminal — the designated zone for shuttle buses and pre-booked private transfers. After landing, switch your phone on and your driver will message you via SMS or WhatsApp confirming they're at the Shuttle Bay with the vehicle make, colour and rego.
Typically 15 to 25 minutes. Domestic arrivals don't require immigration or customs, so the only meaningful wait is for baggage. Carry-on only? You can be at the Shuttle Bay in 10-12 minutes.
Arrive at T2 at least 90 minutes before your scheduled domestic departure. During peak periods such as school holidays and long weekends, allow 2 hours. Jetstar boarding closes earlier than Virgin or Rex — check your boarding pass for exact gate close time.
No. Qantas and QantasLink operate exclusively from T3. T2 is for Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Rex only. The two terminals are about a 5-minute walk apart on the same precinct, but they are separate buildings — make sure you know which terminal your airline uses before arriving.
Yes — even Rex turboprop arrivals (which sometimes use tarmac stairs and a slightly longer baggage process) typically reach the Shuttle Bay in under 30 minutes. The 40-minute window covers virtually all scenarios.
Yes — book outbound and return together for a discounted combined fare. We track both your departing and returning flights. See our return transfers page or include both legs in your free quote request.
