Travelling with children to or from Sydney Airport requires a little more planning than a solo trip — but with the right transfer booked in advance, it can be smooth, comfortable, and stress-free. This guide covers everything from NSW child seat law to early morning tips for parents with tired toddlers.

Child Seat Requirements in NSW

Under the NSW Road Rules and the Australian Road Rules, child restraints are mandatory for all children under 7 years old. This applies to all vehicles, including private hire and airport transfers. Here is the breakdown by age group:

• Under 6 months: Rearward-facing infant restraint
• 6 months to under 4 years: Rearward-facing or forward-facing child seat with a harness
• 4 years to under 7 years: Forward-facing child seat with harness, or booster seat
• 7 years and over: Seatbelt only (though a booster seat is still recommended up to 145 cm in height)

There is no exemption for short trips or private hire vehicles. If your child is under 7, a child seat is required by law.

Ram's Child Seat Service

Ram's can supply and fit approved child restraints for your transfer. When you request your quote, indicate the ages of your children and how many child seats you need. We will confirm the correct restraint type and ensure it is fitted by your driver before the journey begins.

Alternatively, if you have your own child seat and prefer to use it, you are welcome to bring it. Many families travelling with a toddler use their own familiar seat — just let us know at booking so the driver expects it.

Which Vehicle Is Best for Families?

The right vehicle depends on your group size, number of children, and luggage. Here is our practical recommendation for common family configurations:

• 2 adults + 1 child (1 bag each): Sedan with one child seat — tight but workable
• 2 adults + 2 children + family luggage: SUV or People Mover — the ideal family vehicle, space for 2 child seats and 4 to 5 bags
• Extended family or 2+ families travelling together: Mini Bus — seats up to 12 with luggage, multiple child seat configurations available

The SUV and people mover is overwhelmingly our most popular choice for family travel. It provides a high seating position, easy entry and exit for children, ample boot space, and room for two to three child seats without compromising passenger comfort.

Travelling with a Pram or Stroller

Prams are fully welcome in all Ram's vehicles — you just need to declare yours at booking so we can plan for it:

• Umbrella or compact fold stroller: Fits in an SUV boot alongside standard luggage
• Full-size travel pram (single): Requires an SUV or people mover — takes significant boot space
• Twin/double pram: Requires an SUV or people mover, possibly with some luggage placed in the cabin

Tips for Early Morning Flights with Children

Many Sydney families face the challenge of a 6 am or 7 am international departure, which means a 3:30 am or 4 am pickup. Here is how to make it manageable:

• Pack the night before — bags, snacks, entertainment devices, and nappy bags should all be ready before bedtime
• Lay out children's travel clothes the night before so getting dressed takes seconds
• Ask your driver to arrive a few minutes early so you are not rushing
• Bring a blanket for the car — many children will fall back asleep on the journey
• Confirm child seats are fitted at the start of the journey before the vehicle moves
• Use our early morning service — it is specifically designed for these pre-dawn departures

Babies and Infants

Travelling with a baby requires an infant restraint (rearward-facing). Ram's supplies infant seats — request at booking. Ensure you have any items your baby may need during the journey accessible, not in the boot. If you are travelling with expressed milk, formula, or baby food, these are generally accepted through Sydney Airport security in reasonable quantities.

Unaccompanied Minors

Ram's does not currently provide unaccompanied minor transfer services (transporting children without an adult guardian present). All passengers in our vehicles must travel with at least one adult. For unaccompanied minor airline travel, the respective airline's policies apply from the point of check-in.

• Always declare children's ages — not just the number of children — at booking
• State whether you need a child seat provided or will bring your own
