Sydney Airport (Kingsford Smith, code SYD) has three operating terminals, and the difference between them matters. Arriving at the wrong terminal means a 15-minute T-Bus shuttle between T1 and T2/T3 — something you really do not want with a tight check-in window. This guide is the fastest way to confirm which terminal your flight uses, plus the exact pickup zones if you have booked an airport transfer.

Important: Qantas domestic flights depart from T3 only, not T2. This is the most common terminal mix-up at Sydney Airport. Virgin, Jetstar and Rex all use T2.
Terminal 1 (T1) — International
T1 is the international gateway for Sydney. It is on the western side of the runway, accessed via Airport Drive. All international arrivals and departures use this terminal, regardless of carrier. Major airlines that operate from T1 include:
- Qantas (international flights)
- Virgin Australia (international)
- Jetstar International
- Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways
- United, Delta, American Airlines, Air Canada
- Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways, Air Niugini
- China Eastern, China Southern, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, EVA Air
- Korean Air, Asiana, ANA, Japan Airlines

Terminal 2 (T2) — Domestic (Virgin / Jetstar / Rex)
T2 is the larger of Sydney’s two domestic terminals and handles all non-Qantas domestic flights. The main carriers operating from T2 are:
- Virgin Australia — all VA domestic flights
- Jetstar — all JQ domestic flights
- Rex Airlines — regional NSW services
- Bonza, Skytrans, Link Airways — regional carriers
If you are flying Virgin from Melbourne or Brisbane, Jetstar to the Gold Coast, or Rex to Wagga Wagga or Dubbo, you are at T2. Allow 90 minutes before domestic departures during peak periods.
Terminal 3 (T3) — Domestic (Qantas / QantasLink ONLY)
T3 is the dedicated Qantas terminal. Only Qantas and QantasLink fly from T3 — no other airlines. This is the most common point of confusion. Travellers used to Melbourne or Brisbane assume Qantas shares a terminal with Virgin, but at Sydney that is not the case.
Flights at T3 include:
- Qantas mainline domestic (QF) — Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Cairns, Darwin, Gold Coast and more
- QantasLink (QF, operated by Eastern, Sunstate, Network Aviation) — regional NSW, Queensland, Victoria, WA
Booking with a Qantas frequent flyer code-share on Jetstar? Check the operating airline on your boarding pass — if Jetstar is operating, you are at T2 even with a QF flight number.
Getting Between Terminals (T1 ↔ T2/T3)
If you need to move between T1 and T2/T3 (for example connecting from international to domestic), there are three options:
- T-Bus — the free inter-terminal shuttle bus, runs every 10–15 minutes, takes about 10 minutes between terminals
- Train — Sydney Airport Link runs between Domestic and International stations, fast but with the $22 airport access fee added on top of the train fare
- Taxi or rideshare — about 5–10 minutes by road, $25–$40 fare

T1 International — P7 Building
Exit the international arrivals hall, cross over to the P7 multi-storey car park, ground floor pickup zone. Your driver will SMS or WhatsApp you the exact bay number. Maximum wait time after landing: 60 minutes (this allows for immigration and baggage).
T2 Domestic — Limousine & Shuttle Bay
Exit baggage claim, head to the Limousine & Shuttle Bay (signposted, just outside the kerb-side taxi rank). Maximum wait: 40 minutes.
T3 Domestic — Carousel 5 Area
Exit the terminal near Carousel 5. Your driver waits at the designated pickup point just outside. Maximum wait: 40 minutes.
Important: Switch on your phone immediately after landing — your driver messages directly via SMS or WhatsApp. There are no name boards or meet-and-greet inside the terminal. Free WiFi is available at all three terminals if your roaming is off.
Common Terminal Mix-Ups to Avoid
Here are the four most common terminal mistakes Sydney Airport travellers make, and how to avoid them:
- Assuming Qantas is at T2. It is not. Qantas domestic = T3 only.
- Booking a transfer to T1 when flying domestic. Always check your boarding pass.
- Forgetting code-share details. A Qantas-coded flight operated by Emirates leaves from T1. A Qantas-coded flight operated by Jetstar leaves from T2.
- Ignoring the terminal change for return. If you arrive into T2 (Virgin) but depart on a Qantas flight, your departure terminal is T3 — always reconfirm.
