For the first time in nearly a century, Sydney is getting a second international airport — and Blacktown sits in one of the closest established residential areas to it. Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport at Badgerys Creek is just 25 kilometres south of Blacktown, an easy 20-minute drive via the M7 motorway. That makes Blacktown one of the biggest winners from the new airport opening: less travel time, lower transfer costs, and far less peak-hour congestion than the run to Sydney Airport (SYD) at Mascot.

Why WSA Will Change Travel for Blacktown Residents
Western Sydney International is the first major airport built in Sydney since Sydney Airport opened back in 1920. It is being constructed from the ground up with no curfew (unlike SYD), modern terminal design, dedicated freight infrastructure, and direct M7 access. From late 2026, multiple domestic and international airlines will operate from WSA, and the route map expands every quarter through 2027 and beyond.
For Blacktown residents the practical impact is simple: many flights you currently catch from SYD will increasingly be available from WSA. When that happens, the rational choice is a 20-minute drive to WSA over a 50–90 minute schlep to Mascot. The same logic applies to Seven Hills, Quakers Hill, Mount Druitt and the rest of the western corridor.
The Route: M7 South Direct
The drive from Blacktown to WSA is one of the simplest airport runs in Sydney. From central Blacktown:
- Head west to the M7 motorway entry at Old Wallgrove Road or Light Horse Interchange
- Travel south on the M7 for about 18 kilometres
- Exit at Elizabeth Drive or follow the dedicated WSA exit signage
- Direct arrival at WSA terminal kerb
The M7 corridor avoids the typical bottlenecks on the M4/M5 route to SYD — no City West Link congestion, no Anzac Bridge build-up, no airport precinct traffic. Even during peak hour the run rarely exceeds 30 minutes from Blacktown.
No curfew advantage: WSA operates 24 hours with no flight curfew. That means more late-night and early-morning flight options — convenient for Blacktown business travellers who can take a 5am or 11pm flight without dealing with limited SYD timing windows.

Will WSA Have Trains and Public Transport?
The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line is being built and will eventually connect WSA to St Marys (and ultimately the broader Sydney Metro network). For Blacktown residents, that line is not the most direct route at launch, and the trip to St Marys plus the Metro segment to WSA will likely take 45–60 minutes — longer than a direct chauffeur run on the M7. For light luggage solo travel the Metro will work well; for families with bags or business travellers with hard schedules, the chauffeur transfer remains faster and easier.
Should You Switch from SYD to WSA?
The answer depends entirely on which airline and route you need. As of late 2026 and into 2027, WSA route options will expand quickly. Check before you book your flight: if your route is offered from WSA, the case for switching from SYD to WSA on the airport-transfer side is overwhelming — lower fare, shorter trip, less peak-hour risk, and 24-hour operation with no curfew.
